Tips for a Smooth Notarization
Organize your documents: Have everything ready in order to avoid delays.
Bring proper ID: All valid IDs must be physical, unexpired (or issued within the last 5 years), and match the name on your documents.
Unsigned documents for jurats: Jurat documents must be signed in front of the notary.
Acknowledgments: Documents can be signed ahead of time or at the appointment, the notary will confirm your signature.
Have all parties present: Ensure anyone required to sign is available at the appointment.
When in doubt, don’t sign: If you’re unsure, wait for the notary’s instruction before signing.
Schedule ahead: Book your mobile appointment in advance to secure your preferred time.
What Forms of Identification Are Accepted?
When completing an Acknowledgment or Jurat, a Notary Public must verify the signer’s identity. Identity is confirmed by presenting “satisfactory evidence”, in other words, proof that clearly shows you are who you claim to be.
All IDs must be:
Physical (no copies or digital versions)
Unexpired (or issued within the last 5 years)
Matching the name on the document being notarized
California Notaries may accept the following forms of ID:
California Driver’s License or California ID Card
U.S. Passport or Passport Card
Driver’s License or Non-Driver’s ID issued by any U.S. state
Canadian or Mexican Driver’s License issued by the local government
U.S. Military ID

Identification issued by a federally recognized tribal government
Valid consular identification from the applicant’s country

What is an APOSTILLE and who needs it?
An apostille is an official certificate issued by the California Secretary of State that verifies a document for use in another country. It confirms that the notary’s signature and seal are authentic and that the document is legally valid in the U.S.
You may need an apostille for documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, diplomas, or powers of attorney, especially if you’re moving, studying, or working abroad.
At OSignery, we help you understand and prepare the paperwork needed for an apostille, ensuring your documents are accepted without delays or rejections.
Note: Apostilles are used between countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention. Other countries require a different process called authentication and legalization.
